Kidist Amplifying her Voice to advocate for her rights

Kidist, an 18-year-old from Ethiopia, is a determined young woman who is passionate about advocating for girls’ rights. She grew up in a supportive family environment. Her childhood was filled with simple joys, such as playing with friends and spending time with her family.

At school, Kidist is sociable. She enjoys reading the Amharic subject as it comes easily to her. She also has a passion for physics and biology. She has many friends at school and finds it easy to make new friends

Facing Challenges

While Kidist enjoyed many aspects of her life, she also faced challenges. On her way to school, Kidist and her friends faced harassment from men, forcing them to take alternative routes. Fearful of how her parents might perceive the situation, she kept this troubling ordeal to herself.

¨In my district, girls and young women face numerous difficulties. They often encounter issues such as early marriage, harassment, and unfortunately, even rape.” She narrated.

Joining She Leads and Finding Her Voice

In 2022, Kidist’s life began to change when she learned about the She Leads programme through her school’s women’s club and mini media club. She eagerly joined, participating in the community conversations. Through these platforms, she gained vital life skills and a deeper understanding of how to speak out against gender-based violence.

Kidist quickly became an advocate, using her school’s mini-media platforms to share what she had learned, inspiring others to take a stand against harmful practices.

Amplifying Her Voice

Through She Leads, Kidist developed the courage to speak up and advocate for girls’ rights. She uses creative outlets like poetry, drama, and storytelling to raise awareness about gender-based violence and other pressing social issues.

¨In the past, when faced with harassment or similar situations, I would often remain silent and not react. However, since becoming involved with She Leads, I have gained a great deal of self-assurance. Now, when I encounter such issues, I am able to speak up and seek support from my family, friends, and teachers.¨Kidist explained.

Supporting Girls and Young Women

Kidist is passionate about helping other girls and young women. She notes the positive changes in her community, where more girls now know how to access sanitary pads and they are supporting each other.

¨I strongly desire for GYW to have easy access to sanitary pads in order to prevent early marriage. Girls and young women should possess self-confidence and refuse to remain silent in the face of harassment and gender-based violence. They must speak out against such injustices when they encounter them.¨ Kidist stated.

A Future Lawyer

Kidist aspires to become a lawyer, using her knowledge and skills to fight for justice and equality. She is committed to empowering young women and creating a safer community. ¨I want to study law when I go to college and I want to be the best lawyer.¨ She explained.
