Terre des Hommes delivers global impact for thousands of children
From safer online environments to stronger legislation and greater opportunities for children, Terre des Hommes Netherlands achieved significant results worldwide in the fight against child exploitation in 2025. Today, we are publishing our annual report, highlighting a year of impact for children and their communities.
Thanks to the support of donors and the dedication of staff, partners, and volunteers, 166,592 children gained access to protection and humanitarian relief. In addition, 43,571 children participated in targeted programmes to prevent child labour and sexual exploitation. Another 220,396 family and community members were actively involved in activities that contribute to a safe environment for children.
Through 77 projects in 31 countries, Terre des Hommes invested €24 million in protecting children, working alongside 42 local partner organisations. The projects focused on child sexual exploitation (48 projects), child labour (17 projects) and exploitation in humanitarian and fragile contexts (12 projects).
Our efforts focused not only on providing direct support, but also on addressing the root causes of exploitation and strengthening the systems that protect children. This approach resulted in improvements to legislation and regulations, stronger local child protection structures, and increased attention to children’s rights in policy and practice.
Sustainable improvements through systems change
Lasting change requires systems change. In 2025, Terre des Hommes contributed to sixteen amendments to national laws and regulations that strengthen child protection. In Cambodia, for example, targeted advocacy led to stricter child safety requirements for technology companies.
In addition, 88 structural improvements were achieved at the local level. These included the construction of schools in Madagascar, enabling children to attend school instead of working in mica mines. Two regional policy changes were also implemented. In Nepal, for instance, online safety was officially incorporated into the national school curriculum.
Children were also given a voice in driving policy change. Young representatives from Southeast Asia saw 60 per cent of their recommendations reflected in the new ASEAN roadmap to combat child labour.
Why our work remains essential
The need for our work remains as urgent as ever. Under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, child labour should have been eradicated worldwide by 2025. This target was not met: 138 million children are still engaged in work that harms their development and future prospects.
At the same time, rapid technological developments are creating new risks. Online sexual exploitation of children in particular is becoming an increasingly serious threat to children’s safety. In 2025, the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) contributed to an alarming 260-fold increase in reports of online child sexual abuse material.
For this reason, Terre des Hommes invested in research, prevention, awareness-raising, and collaboration with governments, civil society organisations, and other partners throughout 2025 to better protect children both online and offline. Children themselves played an active role in these efforts, for example by educating their peers and contributing ideas for solutions.
Our results also reflect the efficiency of our organisation: in 2025, 84 percent of all income was spent directly on projects and programmes that protect children.
Creating impact together
The results achieved in 2025 were only possible thanks to a broad network of committed individuals. In the Netherlands, 1,633 volunteers supported Terre des Hommes. Through 43 Terre des Hommes charity shops, they make an invaluable contribution to the fight against child exploitation. Together with 75,726 donors, as well as numerous foundations, companies, partner organisations, and other supporters, they make Terre des Hommes’ work possible.
At a time when children around the world continue to face significant challenges, this collective commitment shows what can be achieved when people take action together. We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make these achievements possible.
