SEC NL Programme Lead at Terre des Hommes Netherlands

Sexual exploitation of children (SEC) happens globally, also in the Netherlands, both online and offline.

Monique and her work at Terre des Hommes

In contrast to what many people think, SEC is not a phenomenon that happens abroad, but it also happens in the Netherlands and is amplified by digital platforms. My name is Monique Demenint and I am an experienced senior programme manager. An estimated 3 in 10 girls and 1 in 10 boys become a victim of online sexual exploitation (OSEC) before they are eighteen years old. It is therefore an urgent problem that is often not talked about due to shame and stigma but can have a huge and long lasting mental and physical impact on children and young people.

My focus is on working with Dutch Civil Society Organisations, knowledge institutes and others in setting up a programme on preventing (online) sexual exploitation. For Terre des Hommes a key area is empowering children and young people and giving them a voice. I have been working on this topic at Terre des Hommes since 2020, I am an organisational anthropologist and hold a master’s degree from the Free University in Amsterdam.
